Malaysia is number 56 in PISA for Reading, Maths and Science

I feel sad. Well, as an educator, I wish the results were better but then again, I am trapped in this education system that emphasizes on exams rather than learning and studying. Msia, apparently reads less than the average number and performs below average too in science and maths. I am not shocked. I am just disappointed. I hope, as a teacher, I am not churning out people who don't like reading but I hope I help in building people with character and sensitivities.

I am extremely jealous of students overseas who read at every chance they get. I do it too. But not my students. Not all of them, I know,  but many of them. I read a lot of books but I think I'm the only one in my immediate surroundings who does it. My siblings don't share my enthusiasm and my parents even more. Not their fault but it's the way the society is constructed. I read Sherlock Holmes and nobody I know reads it. I really am alone. It's a struggle at school. I know many of my colleagues don't read so how am I suppose to inspire the students? And they read thrash like those romance novels. I did too. I was young too but I also read all those fantastic literature on the side. 

Please read. Reading is for your soul like food is for your body.

I'm So...

DEAD. I accepted the offer to mark papers for MUET and then when they told me the dates,
it coincides with my school's SPM Trial. So the next three weeks+hari raya i'll be a zombie
who lives only to mark paper.  C'est la vie

If you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

Lately, I've seen a lot of this malaise, especially in FB. I don't understand why some people have the audacity to impose their opinions on others, when the person is only expressing his view. If you are against what he believes in, don't get worked up too much, and understand that in this world we are as different as snowflakes and everybody is entitled to his opinions. Stalking and harassing his status and wall won't solve anything and will only strengthen his resolve. A docile rabbit would bite the lion that cornered it.

And when you express your views, we get it you’re venting, and we respect it. So we would like the same courtesy from you. Stop espousing your ideology with the naïve thinking that it will change the world. Most probably it will not and never will.

I understand the world that we live in is imbalanced.  What saddens me is that there exists double standards-yes, total fairness and just could never be achieved as we are all just humans, but please, not as visible and transparent as that. Let me illustrate. There are two posters in Face book-one sided with A and the other sided with B. Side A is Napoleon, as in The Animal Farm and side B is Snowball, from the same story. A poster of Side A  could post his vents and escape with it, but another of the other side, posts her vents and is criticized, being called with names and have stones thrown upon her.  The first poster is scot-free and as nobody has ‘lynched’ him, THUS ASSUMES HE IS RIGHT AND ALL HIS ACTIONS COMMENDABLE, when it’s just his opinions. The former has not been lynched like the latter poster because his statements ‘are allowed’, according to the authoritarians of Napoleon and the latter is spurned and burned at the stake for having a different opinion from the general crowd. The great unjust is BOTH VOICES must be heard. You hate Side B poster and what she says? Fine and GET ON WITH IT. That’s what democracy is. Not launch a crusade to ‘kill’ her views and silent her.

AWESOME CLASSICS ARE AWESOME!

A lot of people who knows me would probably not know this. I am a classical symphony lover. I don’t know when it started but most probably when I watched Disney’s Sleeping Beauty AND TOEI’s Swan Lake. I was so fascinated by the music score that I watched both movies again and again. And Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake remains my most favourite arrangement. I profess I don’t know music, nor music scores if my life depends on it (heh) but I adore classical arrangements, especially something that has to do with violins. If I were given a chance to play a musical instrument, it would be violin :)

Alas, playing musical instrument is not allowed IN MY FAMILY-think the infamous dialogue from Ibu MertuaKu, “Shapa itu Kassim Selamat?...”  and you’ll get my drift hurr.

Nonetheless, listening to orchestrated songs are more melodious to my ears. That’s why I don’t often listen to Malay songs. To me they are too simple and utilize so few instruments. Other nations use a lot of musical instruments quite elaborately. Take Hindi songs for example. You would notice the use of the orchestra. That’s why A.R Rehman RULEZZ. He’s a magnificent composer. Japanese and Koreans also use orchestrated music quite gloriously hmm..

I’m not dissing local talents. But we don’t have another P.Ramlee. Now he’s a BRILLIANT COMPOSER and MAGNETIC SINGER. Due to influence from Hindi movies, he composed his songs with elaborate instruments. That’s why his songs are still listened till today. AND YOU ASK THE SECRET OF HIS SONGS’ POPULARITY when you compose only with a guitar or God forbid, POLIPHONIC MELODY!! That’s why Indonesian songs are famous, because they are influenced by Japanese. Nope, don’t quote me, there’s no research to prove it, but when you check the aspirations of Indonesian singers and composers, most of them would say, LUNASEA and L’ARC EN CIEL , etc etc.

OK with the rant. I LOVE CLASSICAL MUSICS but it seems nobody in my family share my interest. They say its blaring blah blah. Sometimes I wonder why am I cursed with these ability to detect melodious tones eheh XP 

I wish one day i would get to attend a CLASSICAL CONCERT. My wishlist is of course the PLAY SYMPHONY. It’s an orchestra symphony that plays arrangements from vdeogames/animation and whatnot. EMINENCE is nice too but both HHHNNNGGG are too far… so for now I could only pacify myself with youtube. Checkout the vid of them below. The firat is Eminence playing my favourite Yuki Kajiura score from Tsubasa Chronicle OST, Song of Storm and Fire and the second is PLAY Symphony playing my FFVII favourite score-One Winged Angel aka SEPHIROTH!! dumdum!

Tertipu Tipah Tertipu

Bile bace kisah ni, teringat plak ape yang berlaku pada adik sy pada bulan 12 haritu. Adik sy ke Giant shopping. Pastu die balik bawa water filter untuk dihadiahkan kepada emak. Masalahnye, die beli water filter tuh harganya RM1,000. Ape ke gamaknye mahal beno?Siap eksen lagi, dia ader beli heating gas ngan microwave. Tapi yang 2 tuh tak dapat lagi sbb dia kene bayar RM2,000. Again, ape ke mahal bebeno?

Takdelak cam barang berjenama. Pastu die kate dia TERPILIH utk beli ketiga2 barang tersebu pd harge RM3,000. Tapi nanti dia akan bayar kemudian. So basically barang jenama China tuh setiap satu RM1,000. Masha-Allah. Menangis pekerja kilang kat China kalau tau dia penat2 assemble barang2 tersebut tapi gaji die cikai jer sedangkn dijual di Msia ngan harga yang melampau tingginya mengalahkan barang2 Jepun cam Panasonic.

Adik sy menguatkan hujah betapa beruntungnya beli barang tuh ngan mengatakan salesman tuh kata dia TERPILIH, siap call lagi bos die. Heh. Dengar citer nih aku dah tau. Confirm adik aku mangsa GORES DAN MENANG. Aik, belajar sampai uni pun gullible gak? Apatah lagi mereka2 yg setakat SPM jer.

Sy pun pernah didekati oleh parasit2 takguna nih. 2 KALI. Sekali di TESCO IPOH, sekali di MYDIN SELAYANG. Biasala, modus operandi, cari wanita yg berjalan sorang. Kalau unmarried lg bagus, sbb xde laki die nk pi perambat kalau found out kene tipu.

Yang tak tahan tuh, kasi kad suruh gores(atau koyak mase kat Selayang) dgn alasan kalau gores dapat RM1 UTK DIE. Kite kesian die nih, so kite gores la kan. Alih2 DIA JERIT “AKAK, AKAK MENANG NI, AKAK AKAK MENANG NIH” Bapak punyela kuat, satu parking lot dengar. Yang pelik tuh Pak Guard TESCO Ipoh tuh buat dek jer, ape, ade share ke? Sy un membalas lakonan tdi tuh dgn “Ye ker. Kalau camtuh adik jela amik, akak bagi kat adik..” Terkedu mamat tuh. Haha. Yang kat Mydin Selayang tuh MERAYU2 SRUH KOYAK kertas tuh. Pekejadahnye aku nk layan. BOSAN tengok lakonan manusia. Pelakon drama TV Melayu berbayar lakonan mereke dan kureeng pandai berlakon pun aku tak minat, apatah lagi ko mamat woii.. terlalu over the top, dibuat buat dan mengada2.

Sebenarnya, ade gak kawan sy dah kene. RM15 RIBU melayang. Kesian die. Sebab tuh sy tahu. And PUH-LEEZ la, nak berlakon. SAYA CIKGU TAU. Hari2 mengadap lakonan manusa AKA anak murid. Bile tak siap homework, tuh diaa..kluar segala bakat terpendam-P Ramlee ade, Robert Downey Jr ade, A R Badul pun ade. Lagi KELASS DAN MANTAP. Setakat jerit penuh excitement tepi longkang tuh apela sangat ceh..

Sambung balik kisah adik sy. Adik sy sedar die kene tipu, pucat abih muke die. Pastu ajak sy pi pulangkan barang tuh dan dapatkan balik RM1,000. Heh. Of course, mamat tuh tunjuk slip yang di tandatangani oleh adik sy mengatakn ‘BARANG YG DIBELI X BOLEH DIPULANGKAN’. Ape lagi, sy pun naik panas ler. SAPE AJAR BELI BARANG XLEH PULANG? Wahai pembaca2 blog ini sekelian, SETIAP BARANG YG DIBELI BOLEH DIPULANGKAN KALAU ADA MASALAH. Itu adalah HAK KITA SEBAGAI KONSUMER.

Mamat tuh nk pujuk adik sy tp sy tak bagi muke. In the end, die pulangkan duit sbb tak mahu kitaorang semua bising, and takut bakal2 mangsa lain akan terdengar. Tapi muke mamat nih Ya Allah MACAM BAGUS. Ape, makan duit haram tuh berkat ke? Hidup bole senang? Kepala tuh hiasan je ker?

The Star came up with a very good cover on PETS. As a happy 2 years and counting cat owner, I am happy that a mainstream newspaper actually cared enough about pets to do a probe and investigated the issue.

Yes, it’s true that certain places have these bogus vet. How to know? Your pet’s condition becomes worse or the worst died because of misdiagnose. My auntie said she knew a vet who diagnosed her cats to death. I also knew one vet who said my kitten would do fine but it died on the way home.

Thank God for a vet near my house in SG. At first when I sent my cat to her, she seemed too young and incompetent. But after a few times, and after consulting other vets in KL, I find her very competent. Her age misled me but her words are good. Apparently, the animal healthcare world is very young, and the younger the vet, the better they are (Is this true?) And UPM apparently produces very, very good veterinarians, on par with developed nations’!

One reader in Harian Metro apparently was pissed-off that certain animal lovers (like me!) were angry and disturbed at the way the department involved  put down the dogs owned by the main suspect of the SosilawatI murders. The dogs were owned by the suspects, and since he was remanded two weeks ago, his dogs had not been fed and have been scurrying around eating stock animals at other estates. With complaints received, they tracked down these dogs and put them down with high dose of tranqulisers that killed them. How INHUMANE! Ok, first things first-

1. The dogs were eating other animals because they were HUNGRY and STARVING. Please don’t think they could endure it because they were strayed animals, they are pets!!
2. The owner IS the one being accused as the murderer, not the dogs. Why put the blame on the animals? Oh, the owner used the dogs to threaten Sosilawati? Again, it WAS THE OWNER!!
3. The dogs could been tranquilised and brought to animal centres. Oh, it would incur more fund? Oh please, I’d rather spend my taxes on these animals than on multibillion mega projects that is nothing (remember PKFZ)and is only to enrich the pockets of certain people!
4. Kenapa bising2 psl anjing, sedangkan kisah mengenai nyawa manusia x dibisingkan? -that’s what the reader write. Hello, when did we say we are not horrified or sad about the murders? The newspapers write about it EVERYDAY at the front page. Did we say anything? And just because they are dogs, they have no right to live? No wonder Islam has bad PR.

SHIKEN NO SEKAI

Who are the stupid people who propose this? I bet they just did this in a whim. They NEVER consulted anyone especially those in the education field. The experts and people with PHDs are doing nothing. They just sit and have their nice chit chat with the education system and then just decide to change. I bet the people in the ministry are not qualified too. Though they were ex teachers with at least degrees, but hey what do they know about the education system rite? Even the street peddler who didn’t go to school know that UPSR and PMR are good. The exams have been going on in Malaysia for like FOREVER. And you know what people say when something lasts that long it must be good. Remember when Galileo Galilei said the SUN is the centre of the universe, not the earth? Since the Dark Age people have learned and known that everything revolves around the earth. Go to the edge of the ocean and you will fall. Serve Galileo right that he was almost killed for saying such blasphemy. Yeah, serve him right! Remind me not to go oversea for fear of falling off the earth. *shudder*

LET ME SHOW YOU THE RESULT OF GOING THROUGH (AS THE SECOND BATCH) OF UPSR, PMR AND SPM. (Yes, I am NOT OLD please. I’m just 31. Old is like, what 67?) I will list down the reasons why EXAMS MUST GO ON AS CONSTANT AS THE FLOWING RIVER AND THE RAGING SEAS TO SHOW THE SUCCESS OF EXAM-ORIENTED STUDENTS.

1. OMG. Then the students would not know HOW TO SIT FOR SPM when they reach form 5 if there were no major exams. Sure, they are already harassed with TWO intervention exams, ONE mid term, ONE diagnostics and TWO TRIALS all in ONE YEAR(that’s one exam every two months) before SPM, but it will NEVER BE ENOUGH. It will be an added bonus if the teachers don’t teach at all but just give them exams till SPM arrives. That way they would be so used to it they would feel numb doing SPM thus they would excel in SPM.

2. Students are still young and naïve(aka stupid) they cannot do their own decisions and they don’t know how to study independently. By spoon feeding them ALL the knowledge that the teacher knows, they would memorise more and would act and decide according what are told to them. They are just like robots you know. You have to push their buttons and insert commands so they can move. THINKING? Why should they? Being obedient and just nodding their heads are enough. If there are no exams, how are we gonna know how good a robot they are. A robot has no ideas and opinions. Students should too.

3. STRESS? What stress? The children go to school happily la early in the morning with the heavy bags. Aiyah it’s okla. Still young, their bones can tahan for sure. Then they have clubs and sports but not too much aiya (cuz it’s not in the exam). If they are too tired they cannot go for tuition class later. At 6 go for tuition. Return at 8pm, eat and then go do their homework. Much better this way. They should just study, study, study. Childhood is no more play play. Where you see children play now? Going to school should never be fun. If it is fun then the teacher is not preparing my children for the real world(which sucks really) So their childhood years must be filled with stress, pressure, exams, to be excellent and they must suck.

4. The schools and teachers are now very exam oriented. Why is this bad? If they are not exam oriented, meaning the teachers are allowed to teach their subject according to their creativity and initiative, and the school would be more fun. And God Forbid, students could actually ENJOY learning. This cannot be for the reason that has been established above (because real life sucks and miserable, students must learn to feel miserable when they go to school)

5. No PMR and UPSR, how are we gonna stream those excellent students to go SBP, MRSM or Technic school? Regardless of the fact that those school could actually release sign up forms, and have the school’s own entrance exam. This means we’re doing it the way other developed countries are doing- the school itself comes out with its own exams and picks up the candidates suitable for the school. For example SESERI aims to be the leader in Traditional Dance and Bowling. SESERI would ensure she should pick out those students who are very good with Traditional Dance and Bowling besides academic. Yet, this is a WIN-WIN situation therefore it should not be done because the school cannot be trusted to be fair in selecting students. (The current practice is the practice is the ministry is the one doing the selection on whatever basis they did. So don’t wonder why are there so many Amirahs and Fatins in SESERI and so many Aizats and Khairuls in STAR. That’s VERY FAIR you see)

6. Who cares if a students’ knowledge, ability and experience in school would be assessed once and only in SPM and if they fail that then that’s it. You have no more potentials and a BAD student, regardless the fact that you were the best student in academics and clubs and you excel in every school exam but when you sat for SPM you had a fever. Resulting in you not being able to answer the questions excellently. Imagine this, you are the best student of the year but because you were sick during SPM, you didn’t get a single A in any subject, and thus denied of your dream of going to university. THIS IS HOW WE REWARD HARD WORK AND PERSEVERENCE? All those hard work and knowledge just disappear down the drain, not your fault, but it is FATE. And you wonder why kids as old as standard six committed suicide when they didn’t get the results they expected in UPSR. And though the suicide rate of students keeps increasing day by day, this is DEFINITELY not the reason.

7. If we implement the entrance exam, how can we trust the school teachers to test our students and how would we not know if the teacher only gives good marks because she wants to be an excellent teacher that year? Even though all this time, the same teachers are the ones who mark the PMR and UPSR papers but when it comes to their own students they wouldn’t be objective? If the teacher is not objective during marking and keeps rewarding undeserved good marks, sooner or later you could see the kind of students she produced. If no one ever performs later or got offered to go further their studies, you could tell that the paper was marked incorrectly and the teacher is doing something fishy..

In conclusion is, keep the exams and we will stay the same and never change( change is bad rite?)
